Renewable Energy Development Zones and ISTS Waivers: Catalyzing India's Clean Energy Growth

India’s energy transition is one of the most ambitious in the world. As the nation rapidly shifts away from fossil fuels and towards clean, renewable alternatives, infrastructure becomes the backbone of this transformation—especially transmission infrastructure that connects power generation sites to end users.

Two key government-led initiatives—the Renewable Energy Development Zones (REDZs) and the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) charge waivers—are central to enabling this clean energy expansion.

This blog explores these frameworks, their impact, and how Ecoepicsolar Private Limited is leveraging them to drive grassroots adoption.

What Are Renewable Energy Development Zones (REDZ)?

REDZs are specially designated geographical areas chosen for large-scale renewable energy projects. Selection is based on:

  • High solar irradiance or wind potential
  • Availability of land parcels
  • Access to water sources (for solar thermal cooling)
  • Connectivity to road and grid networks

These zones help centralize planning, simplify clearances, and enhance investor appeal. Recent mapping by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) and MNRE identified REDZs across Rajasthan, Gujarat, MP, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu—targeting over 50 GW capacity in five years.

Benefits of Renewable Energy Development Zones

  • Lower land acquisition and development costs
  • Faster environmental approvals
  • Shared grid and road infrastructure
  • Boost in investor confidence and long-term PPAs
  • Job creation in underserved rural areas

Ecoepicsolar has identified REDZs for hybrid solar + battery microgrid deployment. In one project in Rajasthan, we powered 100+ homes and public buildings using a demonstration microgrid integrated with lithium storage and IoT control.

Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) Charge Waivers

ISTS charges were a major financial barrier for transmitting renewable energy across states. To overcome this, MNRE introduced 25-year ISTS charge waivers for new solar, wind, hybrid, and green hydrogen projects. This makes large-scale projects more commercially viable by reducing landed costs.

REDZ + ISTS: A Game-Changer Combo

When implemented together, REDZs and ISTS waivers:

  • Enable low-cost, high-scale clean energy generation
  • Make remote projects viable for urban and industrial demand centers
  • Encourage long-distance green power transmission without added tariffs

Ecoepicsolar Commitment: Small Contributions with Big Impact

At Ecoepicsolar Private Limited, we align with national clean energy goals by creating grassroots solutions. We’ve partnered with PSUs and DISCOMs to:

  • Install smart solar microgrids in rural areas across 7 Indian states
  • Supply MNRE-approved lithium battery packs to power hybrid setups
  • Pilot government-led smart grid programs and hybrid installations

Through the Skill Council for Green Jobs (SCGJ), we also train youth in REDZs as certified solar technicians—fostering employment and local ownership.

Beyond Projects: A Vision for Sustainability

Ecoepicsolar isn’t just focused on commercial projects. We are committed to:

  • Delivering end-to-end EPC services for small-scale REDZ-based projects
  • Collaborating with academia for R&D and knowledge transfer
  • Promoting women’s participation in solar training and operations

Though small in size, our speed, innovation, and grassroots presence make us a dependable partner for PSUs and a champion for community-first solar deployment.

Conclusion: Enabling Change, One Project at a Time

India’s clean energy revolution is a patchwork of collective efforts. Every microgrid, every rooftop, every REDZ initiative plays a part. At Ecoepicsolar, we view each project as more than an assignment—it is a promise toward a self-reliant, greener India.

Whether it’s a rural belt electrified by a solar microgrid or a REDZ-powered hybrid cluster, our mission is rooted in a simple philosophy: “Future Energy is in Your Hand.”

And with continued collaboration between industry, government, and citizens—we’re turning that future into reality, one step at a time.
